For her birthday, Katrina wanted to "...eat a strawberry - then plant the seeds ... eat an apple - then plant the seeds ..." So we started off by planting seeds and doing seed experiments inside (delayed gratification). Then we moved outside to plant flowers (instant gratification). The weather was lovely. It seemed like a pretty typical day, though - lots of kids at my house getting dirty!

For at least 15 years this has been a DRY lakebed. So dry that runners had made meter markings and used it as a track (athletes from all over train here because of the altitude). The other day we went out there and were shocked to see - a lake! So all that snow & rain we had this winter really did pay off.

too much cuteness

The result of the flower-planting. Everyone is scoffing at us for putting our flowers on the ground because we have notorious flower-abusing children lurking around. So we invited all the would-be meddlers to the party and had them help us plant and asked them to be the special guardians of the flowers. Well, it works in textbooks, but I'm very sad to report that "Naughty Nora" has plucked the flowers that should be on the left... But I'm not giving up. I have several more behavioral management plans in place for her. Too bad she's messing with a former special education teacher!

Donkey rides at Tarmelot - in honor of Palm Sunday - HOSANNA! The little donkey was only 9 days old last year and it was fun to see him almost grown up. The people in this village are so dear and have suffered so much this past winter. It was lovely to see their hardy selves finally dug out of the snow!

Love the idea of your project to eat fruit and plant the seeds. You might explain to the girls that some seeds don't grow in the same year they are planted because they need a cold period like winter. I have trouble growing strawberries from plants so good luck on that one. I planted sunflowers with the kindergarten class because they grow so fast. I am hoping to hear that some that we planted last week have already started to grow. Good luck with NN. More info on the trip soon.

I told Katrina, and she was really bummed. Apparently she feels the order of the universe should be changed around a bit so that seeds can grow in the same year they are planted! But the beans have been wonderfully productive and that seems to have satisfied her!
