A Tale of Two Families

Among the many things for which I am thankful this Thanksgiving, my mother-in-law's clean slate of health after a round with cancer this fall tops the list. She is doing great after her two surgeries - even hosting Thanksgiving for Gerald's brother and family (with lots of help from Emily, I know).

Lois is no ordinary Thanksgiving preparer. This lady, my friends, has the turkey cooked and in the freezer by the Tuesday night before Thanksgiving! She also has made all the sides (from scratch, of course) and has them in the fridge/freezer as well. Buttered corn, creamed beans with bacon, homemade rolls, gravy, peaches, sweet potatoes and pumpkin or pecan pies. The pecan pie has no pecans on Gerald's side because he doesn't like them! I suppose this year it had pecans all the way around.

On Thanksgiving day, there's not much bustle because everything is totally under control - and has been since Tuesday! Food is heated up and we sit pleasantly down for a relaxed meal. Well, not exactly, since there are usually six kids around the table, but you get the idea.

Then there's my side of the family. Specifically my mom's side - the Wiebes. Gerald's introduction to a Wiebe Thanksgiving was the first year we were married. "When should we go down to Hillsboro?" he asked in plenty of time. I responded that I guess we could leave around 12ish in order to get there around 2ish. He gasped, but was able to calm down. So we got there around 3ish and Grandma, Uncle Cole & Aunt Marylin, Aunt Esther and girls welcomed us. Mom and Dad were off somewhere - I can't remember where that time. We sat around and talked about deep subjects (immediately) by the fire. There was no turkey in the oven and certainly no football game on.

Around 5:00, my Aunt Marylin said, "Oh! It's Thanksgiving! I think I'll make an Ethiopian wat!"

And so it was, about an hour later, that we sat down around the table and enjoyed a wonderful (Ethiopian) Thanksgiving dinner together!

You might be wondering how Gerald fared through this with Lois, the Thanksgiving queen, as his mother. You know what? He did just fine. I know he had seconds!

The question of the day is which of the brothers in Jerald? Barb thinks he is the older brother but I think the guy in the blue suit is Jerald. Your Turn... MUD
